PODCAST TRANSCRIPT
Do you know that 93% of consumers read online reviews before choosing a healthcare provider (Source: PatientPop). This highlights how patient testimonials can play a crucial role in attracting new patients and building credibility.
Hi there, this is Huyen Truong - the host of OMD TV and Podcast show - the place to be to grow and scale your practice and today we're diving into a powerful tool that can transform your medical marketing: patient testimonials.
In the next few minutes, I'll show you why testimonials are crucial and how to use them effectively. But before we dive in, let's look at some eye-opening statistics:
The Power of Patient Testimonials
1. Testimonials Influence Patient Decisions
- 93% of consumers read online reviews before choosing a healthcare provider (Source: PatientPop).
- Displaying testimonials can boost conversion rates by up to 270%.
- 72% of patients say that reviews and testimonials are the most important factor when selecting a healthcare provider (Source: Software Advice).
These numbers really highlight the massive impact that patient testimonials can have. Let's break down why they're so powerful.
2. The Power of Storytelling
Patient testimonials that tell a story—highlighting a patient's journey from struggle to recovery—are more likely to resonate with others. Storytelling-based testimonials increase emotional engagement, which can drive decision-making.
According to research by Stanford University, people are 22 times more likely to remember a story than a list of facts or statistics. This can be a game-changer when trying to connect with prospective patients on a deeper level.
3. Video Testimonials Are Highly Effective
Video testimonials are one of the most powerful tools in patient reviews. Studies show that video testimonials can increase conversion rates by up to 80%. Patients are more likely to trust a healthcare provider when they can see real people share their authentic experiences. Video reviews also tend to be shared more often, increasing your practice’s visibility.
4. Trust in Peer Reviews
Patient testimonials are often seen as more trustworthy than advertisements. 83% of patients trust reviews written by other patients more than information from the healthcare provider itself (Source: BrightLocal).
This phenomenon is especially true when testimonials are honest and unfiltered. Patients tend to trust reviews that include both the pros and cons of their experience, as it adds authenticity.
5. Testimonial Impact on Social Media
Positive patient testimonials can be shared across social media, expanding their reach far beyond your immediate patient base. Patients who share their positive experiences on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok often influence their networks to seek similar care.
In fact, 69% of patients report that they are likely to share a positive healthcare experience on social media.
6. Role in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Patient testimonials can also impact your medical practice website’s SEO ranking. Google values fresh, unique content, and patient testimonials—especially if they are regularly updated—provide this.
Review websites and Google My Business profiles that feature numerous patient testimonials are more likely to rank higher in local search results, helping attract new patients to your practice.
So, how do we actually gather genuine testimonials? The key is patient surveys and strategic outreach.
Gathering Testimonials
Getting patient reviews is an important aspect of building a strong online reputation, increasing patient trust, and attracting new patients to your practice. Here are some of the best ways to effectively gather patient reviews:
1. Make it Easy for Patients to Leave Reviews
Send Follow-Up Emails: After a patient visit, send a thank-you email with a clear, simple call to action requesting a review. Include direct links to the review platforms (Google, Yelp, RateMds, Doctifys..., etc.) so patients can easily click and leave feedback.
SMS/Text Messages: Sending a text message with a link to leave a review is another effective method. Since many people read text messages within minutes, this can lead to faster responses.
2. Ask at the Right Time
Right After Positive Interactions: Timing is key when asking for a review. The best time to ask is immediately after a positive experience, such as when a patient is pleased with their treatment outcome or has received great care.
In-Person Requests: During check-out or after the consultation, staff can kindly ask patients to share their feedback. You could even provide a reminder card with links or a QR code to make the process easier for them.
3. Make the Process Simple and User-Friendly
Pre-Filled Review Forms: Use services that allow patients to rate their experience quickly. Providing a pre-filled review form with options (e.g., “rate from 1 to 5” for certain categories) can streamline the process and encourage participation.
QR Codes: Display QR codes in your office or on business cards, allowing patients to easily scan and leave a review on their mobile device.
4. Leverage Your Website and Patient Portal
Add a Review Section on Your Website: Include a “Leave a Review” button on your website or patient portal, making it easy for returning patients to share their feedback.
Patient Portal Invitations: If your practice has a patient portal, use it to send an automated request for reviews after visits or treatments. You can tailor the message to make it more personal, thanking patients for their trust and encouraging them to leave a review.
5. Respond to Existing Reviews
Acknowledge Positive Feedback: Respond to positive reviews to show your appreciation, and address any negative reviews thoughtfully. Patients are more likely to leave a review if they see that you value feedback and are engaged with your patient community.
Encourage Continuous Feedback: When responding to reviews, invite patients to continue sharing their thoughts on how you can improve your services, which helps create a sense of openness and a continuous feedback loop.
6. Use Social Media
Encourage Sharing: Ask satisfied patients to share their experiences on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. Social media shares are a great form of informal review and can reach a wide audience.
Patient Spotlight: Feature patient success stories or testimonials on your practice’s social media. You can then encourage other patients to share their stories in the comments or through direct messages.
Now, let's talk about an often-overlooked aspect of gathering testimonials: leveraging online platforms.
How To Leverage Online Platforms
One of the most powerful tools at your disposal is Google My Business (GMB). Setting up and optimising your GMB listing is crucial for several reasons:
- It's often the first thing patients see when they search for your practice.
- It allows patients to leave reviews directly on Google, which can significantly impact your search rankings.
- It provides valuable information like your location, hours, and services right in the search results.
Here's how to make the most of your GMB listing:
- Setup 1 x GMB per clinic, per location on Google Maps
- Receive 1 x New Google review per week, per GMB
- Respond to each Google Review within 7 business days
- You need 4.5 stars to appear from the search term “best”
- 43 review milestone for visibility boost
- 1 GMB post per week , minimum 1 per fortnight
Here you can see some of our clients’ examples doing great in gathering stellar reviews:
For our UK viewers, Trustpilot is another excellent platform for gathering and showcasing reviews. It's widely recognised and can help boost your credibility.
Other review platforms to consider include Realself, Doctify, RateMDs and Top Doctors. Each of these was created specifically to healthcare providers and can be valuable sources of testimonials.
Once you have these testimonials, it's crucial to use them effectively.
How To Use Testimonials Effectively
Here are some strategies:
- Showcase them on your website
- Share them on social media
- Incorporate them in traditional marketing channels
- Emphasise authenticity and diversity
- Always prioritise patient privacy
Let's break these down:
- Website Showcase: Create a dedicated testimonials page on your website. Consider using video testimonials for added impact. You can also sprinkle relevant testimonials throughout your site, such as procedure-specific reviews on related service pages.
- Social Media: Share testimonials across platforms. Create engaging content like Instagram Reels or TikTok videos featuring patient quotes. Remember to always get permission before using patient information on social media.
- Traditional Channels: Don't forget about print materials. Include testimonials in your brochures, direct mail pieces, and even in-office displays.
- Authenticity and Diversity: Use genuine, unedited testimonials. Showcase a diverse range of patient experiences to appeal to a broader audience.
- Patient Privacy: Always obtain explicit consent before sharing any testimonial. Give patients control over which details are shared.
Patient testimonials are more than just marketing tools. Remember, the key to successful testimonial marketing is consistency. Make gathering and sharing reviews a regular part of your practice's routine, and you'll see the benefits in increased patient trust and practice growth.
